Bret Lizundia
Bret is a principal at Rutherford + Chekene in San Francisco. In his 33 years at R+C, he has served on many of the firm's most challenging projects, including design of new museums, laboratories, performance arts facilities, and academic buildings with a focus on enhanced seismic resilience, as well has seismic retrofits of historic structures. Bret has been active in earthquake reconnaissance, applied research, and guideline and code development throughout his career. He was the president of the Structural Engineers Association of Northern California and the Applied Technology Council and a member of the 2016-2020 Building Seismic Safety Council Provisions Update Committee, and he is a member of the University of California Seismic Advisory Board. Bret was the Project Technical Leader for the 2020 Design Examples and the lead author for Chapter 1 – Introduction and Chapter 8 – Nonstructural Components. He was also part of the ATC-120 project technical team that developed revisions to the nonstructural provisions incorporated into the 2020 NEHRP Recommended Seismic Provisions and ASCE/SEI 7-22.
